FrogFuel First Thoughts and Giveaway

I have some pretty intense races coming up in the next few months and thought it would be a good idea to step up my training a bit.  I am still taking it easy on my back, but I really need to kick up my strength training.  I was asked by FrogFuel to test out their product, and it couldn’t have come at a better time.

Why Obstacle Races Are So Popular

tough-muddre_fe

This was a great article that I wanted to share from Outside Magazine.  The article tried to explain why obstacle racing is so popular amount young Americans.  I would beg to differ.  I this that obstacle racing has cross paths with almost all age groups from the youngest racers who participate in kids races and the young at heart who are about to start collecting their Social Security.  I don’t think this is just a young man’s sport.  This has become something that every age group can enjoy.

How to Prepare for an Obstacle Race

ToughMudderBlog

I found this article and thought it was worthy to report here.  This was originally posted on Livestrong and written by Pete Williams.  This nicely recaps everything we have been saying on our show. You can find the full article here.

In the world of endurance sports, 2012 was the year of the obstacle race, with more than 2 million people competing in some sort of muddy challenge run.

Last year nearly 500,000 people completed a Tough Mudder, the 12-mile slog through strength challenges and Fear Factor-style obstacles, and just as many went through the shorter (5K) Warrior Dash. More than 350,000 competed in one of three versions of Spartan Race, ranging from 3 to 15 miles and requiring athletes to perform 30-burpee penalties each time they fail an obstacle, as well as navigate a gauntlet of mallet-wielding Spartan warriors to reach the finish line.

Malibu Spartan Sprint Review

         spartan-sprint10

The last of the Spartan Sprint races in Southern California for 2012 were held in the Santa Monica Mountains at Calamigos Ranch December 1st and 2nd.  The Spartan Sprint is the shortest of the Spartan Races, which does not always mean the easiest of races.  This race would prove to be one of those cases. Spartan Race made a huge announcement today – Reebok will be their title sponsor of Spartan Races in a multi-year deal. This will open up so many more avenues for Spartan to take their brand further than they have before. Joe De Sena, Founder of Spartan, says it will help them continue to expand globally as well as help make obstacle racing an Olympic sport. You would think that this would had obstacle racers doing flips at the thought of bringing their beloved sport into the mainstream.

So why are Spartan die hards so upset?

For a long time I have struggled to figure out the secret behind the loyal following of Spartan. This is something that I haven’t seen in any other racing series. Their fans will tell you Spartan is the only way to go in obstacle racing and that every other race pales in comparison. It usually includes some colorful words to go along with that sentiment. In an industry that is growing faster than mold on bread, what makes Spartan so special?

Today I think I finally understand. [Read more…]
